British Columbia has declared a state of emergency after a rapidly spreading wildfire forced more than 20,000 people to leave communities around Okanagan Lake.
The Bald Range fire expanded to more than 100 square kilometres after being driven by hot, dry and windy conditions. Homes were destroyed around Summerland and Peachland, while aircraft rescued residents trapped by advancing flames.
Officials said the fire had become powerful enough to generate its own weather conditions, including lightning and unpredictable winds. Highway 97 was closed in affected areas as emergency crews continued rescue and firefighting operations.
