Hiroshima Day is observed every year on August 6 to commemorate the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 and to renew the global call for peace and nuclear disarmament. In 2026, the world marks the 81st anniversary of the devastating attack that changed the course of history and highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear warfare.

On the morning of August 6, 1945, during the final days of World War II, the United States dropped an atomic bomb named "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb exploded approximately 600 metres above the city, instantly destroying large parts of Hiroshima and causing massive loss of life.

An estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people were killed immediately, while tens of thousands more later died due to severe burns, radiation exposure and related illnesses. By the end of 1945, the death toll had risen to around 140,000, according to historical estimates.

A Turning Point in History

The bombing of Hiroshima was followed three days later by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, where the United States dropped a second bomb, "Fat Man." The two attacks ultimately led to Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, bringing World War II to an end.

However, the bombings also triggered decades of debate over the humanitarian, ethical and military implications of using nuclear weapons.

Annual Peace Ceremony

Every year, Hiroshima hosts a Peace Memorial Ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Government leaders, diplomats, survivors known as Hibakusha, and visitors from across the world gather to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.

The ceremony includes a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m. local time, marking the exact time the bomb exploded over the city. Floral tributes are offered, peace declarations are read, and renewed appeals are made for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Legacy of the Hibakusha

The survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha, have spent decades sharing their experiences to educate future generations about the devastating effects of nuclear warfare.

Many continue to advocate for global nuclear disarmament, stressing that the human suffering caused by atomic weapons must never be repeated.

More than eight decades after the bombing, Hiroshima Day remains a powerful reminder of the importance of diplomacy, peaceful conflict resolution and international efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation.
