Six people were killed and another seriously injured after a trailer allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road collided head-on with their car in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district on Sunday.

The accident occurred near Panchkawasa village on the Badnawar–Ujjain four-lane road. The occupants of the car were reportedly returning to Gujarat after offering prayers at Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple.

The impact left the car badly mangled. Six occupants reportedly died at the scene, while local residents and emergency personnel rescued the seventh passenger from the wreckage.

The injured person was taken by ambulance to the Civil Hospital in Badnawar, where treatment was underway.

Victims Were Returning to Gujarat

Police said the victims were residents of Gujarat. While one report identified them as belonging to Dahod district, another described them as residents of Vadodara. Their precise addresses should therefore be confirmed by the police before individual identities are published.

The bodies were removed from the damaged vehicle and sent to the Badnawar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police informed the victims’ families and began the necessary procedures for handing over the bodies.

Driver Detained, Investigation Underway

According to preliminary police findings, the trailer was being driven against the permitted direction of traffic when it struck the car.

Dhar Additional Superintendent of Police Vijay Dawar said the trailer driver had been detained and action was being initiated under serious legal provisions.

There were also preliminary reports suggesting that the driver may have consumed alcohol. However, this allegation remains subject to medical examination and official confirmation.

Police are investigating whether speeding, reckless driving or any other factor contributed to the collision.

Badnawar police station in-charge Amit Singh Kushwah and local administrative officials reached the accident site after receiving information. Traffic on the route was temporarily affected during the rescue and vehicle-removal operation.

Wrong-Side Driving Under Scrutiny

The tragedy has once again highlighted the potentially fatal consequences of wrong-side driving on divided highways.

Authorities are expected to examine the movement of the trailer, the driver’s medical report and other available evidence before determining the exact sequence of events.
