Actor Vijay Granted Permission for Erode Rally with 84 Safety Conditions

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay has been granted permission to hold a public meeting in Erode district on December 18, subject to 84 conditions, police officials confirmed on Monday. The strict guidelines follow the deadly Karur rally stampede in September, which claimed 41 lives and injured over 60 people.

The meeting is scheduled at Vijayamangalam, on a 16-acre temple-owned site. TVK coordinator K. Sengottian had submitted a no-objection certificate from temple authorities, fulfilling one of the prerequisites for approval. Superintendent of Police A. Sujatha re-inspected the venue before giving clearance.

Authorities have mandated a ₹50,000 rent for the temple land and an additional ₹50,000 security deposit. Other conditions include crowd management protocols, emergency medical arrangements, and restrictions on uncontrolled public gatherings, ensuring safety and order during the event.

The Karur incident, which occurred on September 27, triggered heightened scrutiny of public rallies organized by the actor-politician. Vijay arrived late at that rally, which contributed to a stampede, leaving many relatives mourning the deceased. Since then, authorities have insisted on enhanced safety measures for all TVK events.

Vijay, who launched TVK on February 2, 2024, has declared his entry into the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. At a recent party meeting in Mahabalipuram, he was announced as the party’s chief ministerial candidate, with full authority over electoral alliances.

Earlier, Puducherry Police had allowed a TVK rally at Uppalam Expo Ground with six conditions, limiting attendance to 5,000 through QR code-based entry. Vijay addressed that gathering from a van, with roadshows and unrestricted public gatherings prohibited.

The Erode meeting represents a critical step in Vijay’s political campaign, balancing public engagement with stringent safety norms. Authorities and the party have emphasized that compliance with all 84 conditions is mandatory to prevent any recurrence of past tragedies.
