Impeachment Process Begins Against Justice Yashwant Verma

For the first time in independent India, 215 MPs from both the government and opposition have united to initiate impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Verma, marking an unprecedented move in the judiciary.
The impeachment process has begun against Justice Yashwant Verma, who is embroiled in the cash scandal. On July 21, on the first day of the monsoon session, notices of impeachment against him were handed over to the presiding officers in both houses of Parliament. These are signed by 215 MPs from the ruling and opposition parties (152 in Lok Sabha and 63 in Rajya Sabha). This is the first time in independent India that impeachment is being brought against a High Court judge. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar gave this information to the MPs on the first day of the monsoon session.
The impeachment motion has received support from MPs from BJP, Congress, TDP, JDU, CPM and other parties. Among the signatories are MPs like Rahul Gandhi, Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Supriya Sule, KC Venugopal and PP Choudhary.
Inquiry committee will be formed: Now the Parliament will investigate under Articles 124, 217, 218. According to Section 31B of the Judges Inquiry Act 1968, when both the houses give impeachment notice on the same day, then a joint inquiry committee is formed.
Report in three months: The committee will have a senior judge of the Supreme Court, the current Chief Justice of a High Court and a reputed jurist. The committee will investigate the allegations against Justice Verma and submit the report in three months.
Will submit report in Parliament: The committee will submit the investigation report in Parliament. Both the houses will discuss. There will be voting on the proposal to remove Justice Verma.
