MP Government to Train English Teachers to Boost Student Proficiency; 10 Lakh Students Joined Olympiad in 2024
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
In a bid to strengthen English language education across government schools, the Madhya Pradesh School Education Department has announced a comprehensive initiative to train English teachers with a special focus on rural and tribal regions. The program aims to enhance classroom delivery and improve students’ proficiency in the global language, officials said on Wednesday.
Teacher Upskilling Under ELTI
The English Language Training Institute (ELTI), based in Bhopal, will spearhead the teacher training initiative by creating a structured calendar for upskilling educators at all levels—primary, middle, high school, and higher secondary.
The program is being designed in academic collaboration with the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, ensuring that the training modules follow national benchmarks and integrate international best practices.
Diploma Courses, Translation Work, and Evaluation
Officials revealed that ELTI is working on the following key components:
- Diploma-Level Courses: To be introduced in collaboration with state universities, enabling teachers to earn certifications in English pedagogy.
- Translation Support: ELTI will continue to assist in translating examination material into English across various subjects.
- Question Paper Design: The institute contributes to question paper development for state-level assessments and competitive exams.
- Regular Assessments: Periodic evaluations will measure the impact of the training, ensuring continuous improvement in teaching standards.
“Special emphasis will be on teachers from remote and under-resourced regions so that language barriers do not limit learning outcomes,” an official from the department stated.
Olympiad Engagement: 10 Lakh Students Participated
The state’s efforts to promote English learning among students were evident in the World Power Championship – English Olympiad, organized in 2024 for students of Classes 2 to 8. The event witnessed participation from over 10 lakh students across cluster, block, and district levels. ELTI not only developed the question bank and papers for the Olympiad but also ensured quality benchmarks.
Why It Matters
This move reflects the state’s strategy to equip students with better communication skills, a critical requirement for higher education and competitive exams. By empowering teachers, the government aims to bridge the language gap in government schools, particularly in rural and tribal belts, and open doors for students in global academic and professional spaces.
